Evader Story |
---|
Sgt. Ronald Ernest Dolby was the navigator of Wellington HE530. After the bomber was shot down he bailed out and landed '20 miles east of Zwolle'. After he had disposed his parachute, Dolby started walking along a main road. In the morning he came to some woods. He hid himself in some undergrowth and stayed there all day. During the day some Dutch farmers who were working in a nearby field gave him food and milk and warned him that the Germans were searching for him. He then returned to his hiding place in the wood. After spending the second day and night in the woods, he left during the third night (8/9 May) and started walking westwards. After a few hours he got very tired and eventually Dolby fell asleep in a field. The next morning he woke up with a high temperature. After some workmen had found him, they took the airman to the police station at Nieuwleusen. although the police men were very kind they said that they could not help and were forced to hand the Australian over to the Wehrmacht. Soon after the Germans arrived and took him to Zwolle. |
