Evader Story
2/Lt. Edwin F. Pollock was the pilot of B-17 42-3488. After bailing out he landed safely near the Otterswijk, north of De Wilp. Soon several curious Dutchmen gathered around the American airman. One of them, Piet Plas, guided Pollock away from the crowd and escorted him to the house of hedteacher J.J. Zijp, one of the leading underground workers of De Wilp. He was a member of the LO and the KP. Because Zijp and his wife had nine children Pollock couldn’t stay here. The same evening he was transferred to the Family P. Dijkhuis at the Jonkersvaart in De Wilp. He hid here from 11 until 16 December. On this date Hendrik Borgers, who owned a garage in Leek, picked up Pollock and took him to an address that T. Lycklama à Nijeholt in Veenhuizenhad provided to Zijp: Family Jans Assies, also in Veenhuizen. Via another address in Appelscha, Pollock ended up in the house of the parents of Tiny Mulder im Drachten. Here he joined another member of the crew, 2/Lt. M.A. Raim, the co-pilot (E0224). After a few months hiding here, they moved to a young family in 'a village south of Workum'. In May 1944 they finally made their way to the south. They didn't get far. In Antwerp Pollock and Raim were arrested 'on a saturday' when their papers were checked in a tram.
