---|
F/Sgt. Ronald Barnes was the wireless operator/air gunner of Halifax HX320 that was shot down by a German nightfighter in the early hours of May 25, 1944. The whole crew bailed out in time and survived. Initially five crew members managed to evade capture, but it was only Barnes who would evade 'permanently'. Sooner or later all the others would be captured. After bailing out Barnes landed at 1.30 AM in the meadow of the farm of Martinus Scheepers, his wife Antonetta and their ten children at Broek B 124 at Lieshout. The family took him in, gave him civilian clothes and hid Barnes for about hundred days until 3 September 1944. On this dat Willem J.J. Tak escorted Barnes by bicycle to his own house at Humboldtstraat 10 in Eindhoven. According to the Helper Report of Tak he picked up Barnes at an earlier moment as he hid in his house '35 days'. Barnes was liberated in Eindhoven on 18 (or 19) September 1944 by British troops. |
