Evader Story |
---|
P/O. Gilbert Lee Caunt was the navigator of Halifax LW137. Returning from a bombing mission to Aachen, a nightfighter attacked the bomber and set it on fire. The Halifax eventually crashed in the Emilia Polder near Made and Drimmelen. Four crewmembers were killed. The three survivors, among whom Caunt, managed to evade capture for a period. Caunt landed at Dombosch near Geertruidenberg. He sprained his ankle during the landing, but despite this he soon started moving in southerly direction. Early in the morning he contacted some Dutchmen who provided him with civilian clothes. On it's way to a place to hide he was halted and arrested by a German soldier, probably near Breda. It's unclear if Caunt evaded capture for more than 24 hours. He eventually ended up in Stalag Luft III near Sagan. |
