History
On August 15, 1944, an air combat took place over the Nijensleek area, between allied bombers returning from Germany, and German fighters. The USAAF Liberator B-24H bomber crashed near the river Steenwijker Aa. In the fight, a German Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 was damaged and crashed opposite to the current primary school 'De Bron', on the Hoofdweg in Nijensleek.
