The war memorial in Nijensleek (municipality of Westerveld) is an erratic boulder, on which two white plaques are attached. The plaque placed at the left on the monument contains a part of a Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6. |
History |
On August 15, 1944, an air combat took place over the Nijensleek area, between allied bombers returning from Germany, and German fighters. The USAAF Liberator B-24H bomber crashed near the river Steenwijker Aa. In the fight, a German Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 was damaged and crashed opposite to the current primary school 'De Bron', on the Hoofdweg in Nijensleek. |
