The monument of gratitude to pilot T.E. White in Noord Sleen is made of flat-cut natural stone. An informative text is engraved in the stone.
The monument to T.E. White in Noord Sleen recalls the crash of the American B-17G 'FIRE BALL' 2, reg.nr. 42-39761, callsign DS-D, assigned to the 351BG/511BS. On January 11, 1944, this aircraft of the USAAF ran into problems on return to its base in England. The flak-damaged aircraft was in an emergency situation over Noord-Sleen. All the crew bailed out except for the pilot, 2/Lt. T.E. White, who mangedto steer clear from the hamlet and crashlanded just north of it in the forestry 'Sleenerzand'. The site is behind the monument. All crew members had landed safely and initially managed to escape from capture.
