In the early hours of 22 June 1944, Lancaster LL840, VN-M of RAF 50 Squadron was on the return from a bomb mission to Scholven/Buer (synthetic oil plant). The aircraft fell victim over Oene to a German nightfighter, caught fire and crashed at Oenerbroek. The crew's fate was as follows: - W/O. J.F. Lane and F/Sgt. F.H. Shorter lost their lives in the crash. They are buried at the General Cemetery in Epe. - F/Sgt. A.G. Beresford and Sgt. P.F.J. Hayes baled out early and were taken POW. They spend the time until liberation in a Luftwaffe-Stammlager in Poland; - S/Ldr. T.B. Cole, F/Lt. J. Craven and F/O. E.J. Blakemore baled out over Oenerbroek. Cole was transferred to the police and taken prisoner. Craven and Blakemore were taken care of by the underground and after wandering about several hidingplaces eventually returned via the liberated province of Brabant safely to their homeland. |
