History
The memorial commemorates the residents of Medemblik, that in the morning of June 3, 1942 an English Hampden crashed into the IJsselmeer, approximately 1 kilometer east of Medemblik. On the night of 2 to 3 June 1942, 195 Royal Air Force bombers, including Lancasters and Hampdens, were sent out to bomb the Krupp factories in Essen. The Hampden AT154 had taken off from Balderton airport in England at 23:26. At 01.06 hours the Hampden was shot down from the air by a German Messerschmitt Bf 110 night fighter from Leeuwarden airport on its outward flight to Essen.
