History |
The Halifax memorial commemorates the crash of an allied plane in the municipality of Weststellingwerf on September 13, 1943. On that day, 446 bombers took off from England to bomb Bremen. Halifax BB205 was probably damaged during this mission and the engines overshot. Above Weststellingwerf the aircraft was fired upon by a German night fighter. Both aircraft became involved in a lengthy dogfight. The Allied plane caught fire. The crew members were able to parachute from the aircraft and all made a safe landing. In the crash, only a horse that was near the place where the plane crashed was injured. The crew members al survived the crash and were taken prisoners of war. |
